USA 3-0 Germany: “Maya Weishar, one for the future” Ong
B [2] USA 3-0 GERMANY C11
Olivia Clyne 3-0 Maya Weishar 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-3 (31m)
Sabrina Sobhy 2-0 Katerina Tycova 11-1, 11-4, 11-3 (20m)
Olivia Fiechter 3-0 Saskia Beinhard 11-0, 11-3, 11-4 (19m)
It was Germany’s second match of the day, and they had a pretty full on encounter with Scotland. And I have to say I was extremely impressed by young Maya Weishar. She is certainly one to keep an eye on, confirmed by Beng Hee Ong, the US Coach, who also felt she was one for the future.
“She played very well against Olivia, obviously, we didn’t know how good Maya was”, commented the Former Malaysian number one. “I think this girl has a great future, I have just spoken to the coach and said that they should invest some time with her, I think she probably is going to be the next best.”
“It’s obvious to us that with England’s Gina Kennedy injured, USA is truly one of the contenders, if maybe not for the title – although anything can happen on the day – but for sure for the final.
“Well, you know me since I’m 15, I played a lot of world team championships, but to travel with Team USA is a huge honour. These girls are REALLY serious, they want to at least make their seedings, number 2, the final is our targe for now. If we go further and win it, great. But it’s tough against the top three girls. But yes, the target is the final.”
