Canada 2-1 Switzerland – Canucks edge into the quarters
[7/8] CANADA 2-1 SWITZERLAND
Samantha Cornett 2-3 Ambre Allinckx 12-10, 14-12, 7-11, 8-11, 9-11
Hollie Naughton 3-0 Nadia Pfister 11-4, 11-2, 11-3 (18m)
Nikole Todd 3-1 Celine Walser 10-12, 13-11, 11-8, 11-6 (29m)
What a thriller as Canada justified their 7/8 seeding, but only just. Canada were resting their #2 while the Swiss were resting their #1, and as the match developed both coaches were probably regretting the choice, or at least wondering ‘what if’ …
Sam Cornett went two-nil up in the opening match – but only just, extra points needed in both games – but a determined Ambre Allinckx fought back to level, then came from 1-6 down in the fifth to claim victory 11-9 on her second match ball.
Hollie Naughton quickly drew Canada level as she despatched Nadia Pfister in three, setting up a second string decider between Nikky Todd and Celine Walser.
The first two games were shared, both in extra points, but it was the experienced Canadian who held the advantage in the next two games, taking her team through to the last eight.
