Top four seeds qualify for the quarters
The afternoon matches produced 3-0 wins for USA, Malaysia, India and South Africa – meaning that USA and Malaysia qualify for the quarter-finals with two wins. Tomorrow’s France v India and Hong Kong v South Africa matches will decide who qualifies alongside them in Pool C and D (almost certainly as runners-up as it’s also top v bottom tomorrow).
USA were boosted by a good win for Amanda Sobhy over Camille Serme in the opening match, leaving Olivia Blatchford and Reeham Sedky to complete the win. Malaysia had their work cut out against Asian rivals Hong Kong, but Nicol David’s opening win over Annie Au, recovering from two games down, was the spark, and 3-1 wins for Sivasangari Subramanian and Low Wee Wern followed.
The evening matches produced identical scenarios in Pools A and B, with Egypt and England beating Canada and New Zealand to qualify on two wins, leaving tomorrow’s Canada v Australia and New Zealand v Japan matches to finalise the quarter-finalists.
Defending champions Egypt were untroubled as they dropped just one game against Canada while England did the same against New Zealand.
